Bradley S. Ackroyd
I study how water–rock–stress interactions evolve over time, and how repeated or changing environmental forcing drives geological systems across irreversible thresholds that alter future fracture behavior, permeability, and chemical response.
My research focuses on the role of water in fracture evolution, particularly how hydration, stress history, and cyclic forcing introduce memory and hysteresis into geological systems. By combining laboratory experiments with concepts from hydrology, geochemistry, and geomorphology, I am interested in understanding when fracture-driven processes remain reversible and when they fundamentally reorganize system behavior.

Research Experience
Graduate Research Assistant: University of Wyoming July 2023 – present
• Investigating the geochemical impact of reusing produced water for hydraulic fracturing in the Wolfcamp Shale, Delaware Basin. Geochemical analysis focuses on how increased ionic strength affects clay mineral stability and sorption. The primary goal is to quantify the mobilization of redox-sensitive metals and potential contaminants, offering critical insights for sustainable water management in hydraulic fracturing.
Student Field Camp: University of Wisconsin, Volcanoes & Ice Summer Program (VISP) June - July 2022
• Used drones to photograph central Oregon lava flows, tuyas, glaciers and glacial moraines; created high resolution maps and GIS data sets.
Student Researcher: SCORE Program, NASA Space Grant Consortium Jan – May 2022
• Research project – Pedestrian evacuation travel times to safety zones in Seaside, OR – evaluated time to reach safety on foot in Seaside, OR during a major earthquake and tsunami event. Recorded walking routes and times, plotted against tsunami inundation times, highlighting key bottlenecks.
• Presented data and findings at the NASA symposium at Oregon State University.
